VA Online Sign-In Account
It's smart to set up a secure online account for VA benefits. In 2025, the VA is making changes, and soon, you will need a secure sign-in partner like Login.gov or ID.me to access VA websites and apps. The process involves creating an account with one of these providers and then verifying your identity to link it to your VA information.
I have encountered many veterans from a wide variety of backgrounds who either were unaware of the existence of these online accounts or did not know how to properly set them up. The process involves multiple steps, which can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but once everything is completed correctly, you should have reliable access for awhile without needing to revisit it frequently.
Here is a step-by-step guide to get started:
What to have ready:
Basic information
Regardless of whether you use Login.gov or ID.me, you will need the following personal information:
Your personal email address: Use an address that only you can access.
Your Social Security number: This is a key piece of information for identity verification.
Identity documents
For most online verification processes, you can verify your identity by using a smartphone to take and upload pictures of one of the following valid, unexpired documents:
U.S. Driver's license
State-issued ID
U.S. passport book
U.S. passport card (ID.me only)
Additional items for certain situations
If the online verification process can't confirm your identity with the standard documents, or if you don't have a U.S. phone number or a photo ID, you may need additional items and a different verification method.
For Login.gov via mail: If you don't have a U.S. phone number, you may be able to verify your address by mail. You would then need a computer and the mailed code to finish.
For ID.me via video call: If you cannot verify online, you will need two forms of identification (one primary and one secondary). This could include documents like a Social Security card, birth certificate, or utility bill, in addition to your photo ID.
In-person options
Both services also offer in-person verification if you prefer not to upload documents online or need extra help.
Login.gov: In-person verification is available at participating U.S. Post Office locations.
ID.me: You can schedule an appointment to verify your identity in person at a participating UPS Store
Creating the Account:
Step 1: Head to the VA website
Start by going to the main sign-in page for VA.gov.
Step 2: Choose your sign-in partner
On the VA sign-in page, you will be given a choice between Login.gov and ID.me. Both are secure, but you may have a preference depending on your situation:
ID.me is required if you live outside the U.S., don't have a Social Security number, don't have a current driver's license, or have a phone plan not in your name.
Login.gov is the government's own account provider.
Step 3: Create your account
After selecting your provider, you will be directed to their website.
Click "Create an account" and enter your personal email address.
Confirm your email by clicking the link in the email sent by Login.gov or ID.me.
Set a strong password. Make sure it's unique and follows the password criteria outlined by the provider.
Step 4: Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA)
MFA adds an extra layer of security to your account. You will need to choose at least one, and it is recommended to choose at least two, MFA methods, such as:
A 6-digit code sent via text message to your phone.
An authenticator app.
A security key.
Step 5: Verify your identity
This is a one-time process to confirm you are who you say you are. You can typically do this online, but in-person options are available if needed.
Start the process on VA.gov by signing in with your new Login.gov or ID.me account and following the prompts to verify your identity.
Choose your verification method (online, video call, or in-person).
Follow the instructions to upload photos of your ID and enter your personal information. You will need documents such as a driver's license, passport, or other state-issued ID.
Step 6: Connect your VA information
Once your identity is verified, you will be directed back to VA.gov. The system will connect your verified Login.gov or ID.me account to your existing VA health and benefits information, such as your My HealtheVet portal.
