Volunteering & Service Projects

Overview

Service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.

The Volunteering & Service Projects program offers veterans, former first responders, and community members an invaluable opportunity to reconnect with one another through meaningful and purpose-driven action.

Taught and coordinated by experienced veteran leaders, dedicated community partners, and committed nonprofit collaborators, this program transforms compassion into tangible impact—demonstrating how collective effort can rebuild confidence, foster unity, and inspire hope.

Whether restoring a local trail, mentoring youth, or supporting area shelters, each project provides a powerful chance to serve again, side by side, united for a cause greater than ourselves.

Course Description

Participants will learn how to organize, lead, and contribute to meaningful community service initiatives. Sessions cover:

  • Project planning and teamwork fundamentals

  • Identifying community needs and partnerships

  • Volunteer coordination and leadership

  • Hands-on service events: such as park clean-ups, food drives, habitat restoration, or retreat facility improvements

Every project is structured around AFL’s core belief that service heals twice—once for those helped, and again for those who give. Participants leave with new leadership skills, restored pride, and a tangible reminder of what teamwork can achieve.

Who It’s For

  • Veterans and first responders looking to give back and reconnect

  • Families, students, and civic groups seeking community involvement

  • Local businesses and partner organizations wanting to collaborate

  • Anyone who believes that action speaks louder than words

Led by Those Who Served, Supported by the Community

Each project is led by veterans and former first responders who understand what it means to serve with purpose and integrity.
Working alongside AFL staff, local nonprofits, schools, and civic partners, they guide volunteers through every step—from planning to execution—emphasizing leadership, teamwork, and respect.

This collaboration transforms volunteer events into shared experiences that bridge generations, strengthen relationships, and rebuild trust between service members and the communities they protect.

Why It Matters

  • For the community: Brings people together to create visible, lasting change.

  • For veterans and first responders: Restores a sense of mission, belonging, and pride through continued service.

  • For families: Offers shared purpose and connection through teamwork and gratitude.

Volunteerism builds more than projects—it builds people. It teaches that healing isn’t passive; it’s active, hands-on, and most powerful when shared.
