This calculator section is the dedicated home for VA combined-rating math. It includes a working calculator, a plain-language explanation section, and a place for the official text of § 4.25 and § 4.26 without cluttering the main regulation search page.

Combined Ratings Calculator

Use this section for combined ratings, bilateral-factor handling, raw percentages, final rounding, and step-by-step VA math breakdowns.

Use the Side and Group fields only for possible bilateral handling. Example: right knee and left knee can both be marked as Lower Extremity. Right shoulder and left shoulder can both be marked as Upper Extremity.

Calculation Output

Shows sorted inputs, bilateral-factor handling, raw combined value, and final rounded result.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Percentages Are Combined

VA math does not add ratings like regular math. Each new percentage is applied to the remaining efficiency after the larger percentages are considered first.

2. The Order Matters

Ratings are sorted from highest to lowest before they are combined. That is why the calculator shows the order it used before it gives the raw combined percentage.

3. Final Rounding Happens at the End

The calculator shows the raw combined value first. After all ratings are combined, the final result is rounded to the nearest 10, and values ending in 5 round upward.

4. Bilateral Factor Is Separate

When qualifying compensable disabilities affect both sides of a paired body area, the left and right values are combined, then 10 percent of that bilateral value is added before the result is folded into the rest of the ratings.

5. Raw vs Final Result

The raw percentage helps users see the true intermediate value before rounding. The final rounded percentage is the number most people think of as the combined rating.

6. Use the Packet Feature

When you are finished, you can send the calculator result into the Selected References section so it prints with the other regulations or diagnostic codes you collected.
